Student A Response to Post #1

Ms. Ciccarelli, here are the answers to two questions, two images of percents seen in real world contexts and one comic I found:

#1. You can use a proportion to solve for a percent by writing the part of the day over the total hours and setting it to x, your unknown percent, over 100.  Then, cross multiply and divide by the denominator to find the percent.
#3. Tim and Moby relate percents to their vacation schedule by looking at the time they have to do activities as percents, or parts, of a whole day.

Two images:
This one is from Kohl's and shows that denim is 30-40% off the original price.
This image shows that Lay's Kettle Cooked chips have 40% less fat than regular chips.

One comic:

Welcome! Instructions for how to participate in the blog.

Hello students! Welcome to my blog.  It's a fun and engaging way to discuss different math topics.

Each week, I will post something that pertains to a class lesson or discussion.  There may be videos or online articles I would like you to read.  With the post, there will usually be a few questions that I want you to answer right here on the blog.

Here are the instructions for how to participate:
  • Check the blog at the end of the week and look for the most recent post from me.
  • If there is a link, click on it-- it will take you right to the content I wish to share with you.
  • After completing the task (watching a video, reading an article, etc.) post the answers to your questions.
  • Be sure to include all the components I am asking for.  This may require you to research on the internet on your own as part of your response.

Post #1:
This week we were introduced to percents, discussed how the term percent literally means "of 100", and solved simple percents. As a review of this weeks lesson, I am asking you to watch a video, answer questions and locate examples of real world percents (similar to the one below) on the internet.

For this week:
  • Watch the attached BrainPop video titled "Percents".
  • While you watch, think about examples of where you see percents in the real world.
  • When you are finished, post your answer to two of the following questions.
  • Post two images you found online that show percents in a real world context.
  • Provide the link to an online article or funny comic that pertains to percents.

Questions:
1. How can you use a proportion when you are looking for the percent?
2. How can you turn the percent into a decimal?
3. How did Tim and Moby relate percents to their vacation schedule?
4. Tim says "There are ____ ways to solve a percent problem, depending on the information you have." How many ways are there?
